What my birthday has taught me about celebrating in business
I’m writing this the day after my 37th birthday. 🥳
Part of me contracts at just the thought of being 37. 😬
It feels scarily close to 40, and 40 is one of those far off ages where I’ve always held vague notions of what life would look like but without many of the details. 🏆
Of course, as with all vaguely held goals there’s a bit of disappointment there for the achievements that I never really spelled out and so inevitably haven’t achieved. 😛
And yet, on the other hand I love getting older. 💛
I love taking time to appreciate the connection I am cultivating with myself and so many amazing people who are in my life just now. 💁♀️
This year I took some time to intentionally celebrate my birthday. 🎉
Not in a big grand way, but in some smaller, more meaningful ways. ✨
I had a catch up with some friends over dinner, I asked for a delicious birthday cake, I planned some fun activities with my kids. 🏊♀️
I had a think about what would make the day feel special, put some effort into sharing these and made plans to make them happen. 🌿
The icing on the cake (pun intended) was receiving so many gorgeous surprises pressies and messages that helped me feel super loved. 🥰
What I’ve been reflecting on afterwards is how easy it is to skip celebration completely, or to leave it in the hands of others. 🖐
Not just for birthdays, but for other smaller day to day moments, or milestones of achievement. 🌟
In fact, when it comes to business building, it can be hard to loose track of progress all together. It’s so finish (or not) one thing and then move straight on to the next without any pause or acknowledgement of what we’ve achieved.
The result is that we feel super busy but don’t feel like we’ve made any progress at all!
In Episode 82 of The Balancing Act Podcast I’m talking more about “How to celebrate even when you’re not making any progress”. I share my top three ways to cultivate more celebration time:
Keep a daily gratitude journal
Join a like minded community
Plan bigger celebration occasions
