Why you shouldn’t hire me as your coach

One Saturday a few weeks ago, my husband was out and I needed to nip to Tesco for some milk and bread.

I usually avoid supermarkets by myself at all costs, and taking two little people with me happens once in a blue moon.

Unfortunately on this occasion, it looked like that was destined to be the case.

My older son has got to THAT age, where we just have to be in the vague vicinity of a shop and he is asking to buy something.

It’s proving a testing time for me, as I grapple with what answer I give each time.

If it’s a no, I want to have my reasoning clear, rather than defaulting to “It’s too much”, “You don’t need anything”, “We can’t afford that”, or the dreaded “I wants don’t get”.

What I want is to explain to him that we get to choose what we spend our money on, and that we want those choices to be on things that are meaningful, and that we truly value. Things that will enhance our life and bring us long lasting enjoyment rather than be a short term fix that is soon forgotten about.

Now, my skills in translating this successfully into 4 year old speak aren’t quite there yet, and so this particular Saturday afternoon involved me wheeling a trolly round Tesco, hands gripped and teeth clenched, repeatedly reasoning why it was fair that on this one occasion we weren’t buying anything, and we did need to hurry up so we could get finished up, back home, and on to his friends birthday party.

You might be wondering what all of this has to do with coaching…

It’s funny how as adults we can explain to our kids what a worthwhile use of money is, but yet sometimes find it hard to do the same for ourselves.

I have spent a fair whack on coaching by now, and it is thee most life changing investment I have made. It’s given me long term value, often way beyond what I anticipated.

And yet, people still regularly tell me that they can’t invest because it’s too expensive.

I know that for some this is genuinely the case, and of course I would not advocate undergoing unnecessary hardship or struggle. However, if the “too expensive” story rings true for you I would love to invite you to consider if this is genuinely the case, or is it a matter of priority.

Are you in fact placing more value on material investments that might bring a short term satisfaction, rather than investing in yourself for long term benefit.

In this episode of the PODCAST I’m diving into ‘Signs that my coaching is not for you’.
