Are you embarrassed of your business?
This might sound sillyβ¦
But I have this little business idea. βΊοΈ
Just on the side, ya know? π
Itβs not anything serious, more of a hobby really. π€¨
But itβs fun. π
And it gives me something to do in my free time. π
Itβs a bit of an outlet from the kids.π
And Iβm finding that the skills Iβm learning are actually really helpful in my current job too. π€
This was me. On and on and on. π₯±
I started an artisan granola company back in 2015 (pre-kids), on the side of my corporate job. π»
I won an award just 6months after starting it up. I put so much hard work and proper passion into it. When I look back now at what I achieved it was flipping kick ass. π
But I did not take ownership of any of it. π³
All I wanted was to keep it hidden under some sort of invisibility cloak. π¦
π I rehearsed my sentences over and over before even mentioning it to any of my colleagues.
π I had to psyche myself up to reply to enquiries from people about where they could buy it.
π I nearly withered away under the table when someone I knew turned up to a food fair I was at.
π I turned my phone on silent when a local radio station called for an interview.
I said I wanted it to be successful, but honestly I felt silly. βΊοΈ
I worried that other people would think I was happy βjustβ baking all day long. π©βπ³
For dabbling to bring in pocket money. π°
I donβt know how many hours I put in without having any real income to show for it. π₯
I was happy to do everything behind the scenes, but putting myself out there in any way was so painful. π¬
And yet when I did finally start talking about it to people they thought it was amazing.
They felt inspired.
My confidence grew and I started to own the bigger vision I had which was to support women in developing countries to start up their own artisan food business.
It started to not feel so silly after all. π«
I hear this SO often from other women. We have these massive dreams, but we dismiss them in an instant because we feel silly. And this is not the attitude that is going to support us in changing the world.
So this week on the podcast, tune in to hear me talk about:
- All the times Iβve heard βI know itβs silly, butβ¦β
- Why it happens
- What to do about it
