What your GCSE English teacher can teach you about life as a mum

Do you remember that cringing feeling from school of getting your creative masterpiece graded only to find out that it hadn’t exactly lit up the world, or your teacher anyway, in the way you assumed it would?

This was my experience of almost every piece of creative writing that I ever did at school. 📝 

To be honest, I’d always been a bit too shy to fully embrace the creativity but a few of these experiences almost shut it down altogether.

I remember being up well past my teenage bedtime one evening writing about an inspirational person in my life.

I had chosen to write about my granny but rather than trust the flow of my words I instead resorted to all the safe factual information that couldn't be judged as being wrong. ⏰ 

Which I suspect did in fact make for a much more boring read. 🤔

These patterns stick.

And so often as adults we find it difficult to express our creativity and also to find meaning in them when they're not being marked out of 10 by a teacher

In this episode of the PODCAST I am speaking with Helen McNutt of Mother of Copy.

After a high flying career as a freelance copywriter for many exclusive brands including GQ, Guardian, and Cosmo Helen has embraced motherhood as a superpower and integrated it into her passion for copywriting. She now teaches other mums with small businesses how to write copy that they love.

Helen shows mums how to work with the unpredictability of family life and how to use copywriting to bring out both their brand and personal identity. It’s a very lively conversation that covers all sorts! My favourite bits include:
