What is it that you’ve been putting off, like forever?
Mine was publishing a website. The very first time I published a website I literally felt sick. You know when the full body fear sets in? 😬
I’d tinkered around with it for I don’t know how long. It was before kids, when I actually did have time to spend hours and hours and hours and hours on things. ⏰
I kept on telling myself that I would hit go. ✅
But then something else got in the way. 🤨
I felt tired and so I decided that actually I needed an early night. The kitchen floor needed mopped. I had to go for a run. 😴
I can’t actually remember what the final incentive was, but one night I’d run out of excuses and I just sat down and did it. 🤩
In hindsight this was obviously procrastination. I was scared of putting my creation out here in the world for all to judge. But instead of acknowledging this I made up all sorts of excuses about why it wasn’t the right time. 😝
So, how do you know? How do you work out at the time whether you’re procrastinating and need to figure out how to actually get the thing done, or whether you do actually need the break and some time away?
The three things that I look out for are:
the importance of knowing the why behind a task - is it important to you or to someone else? You’re a lot more likely to be putting something off if you’re not clear on what it is that actually needs done, or why it needs done.
looking out for the patterns that keep coming up - if its something that has been around for a while then you need a better strategy. You need a different way of building it into your routine, or a different way of doing it altogether.
tuning in to what tired looks like for you - pay attention to your body and your behaviour.
Now, let me know in the comments below, what is it that you’ve been putting off?
