Feel the fear and maybe don’t do it anyway…

Let me tell you two tales of feeling the fear and doing it anyway….

In the first, imagine that you really want to go abroad on holiday, but you don’t like flying that much. ✈️

You decide to feel the fear and do it anyway and so you step onto the aeroplane so you can get to the white sandy beach and the holiday you and your family have been craving.

Maybe you didn’t exactly enjoy the flight but you got a buzz out of overcoming your fear and had some thoughts on what you might do differently next time.

The holiday is amazing and you make memories to last a lifetime. 🏝

The flight back isn’t ideal but still better than last time and you’re excited to book again for next year.

Now let’s imagine an alternative.

Your fear of flying is more than just a bit of discomfort, in fact at times feels completely paralysing. ✈️

No-one else seems to feel like this and you know your family really want to go on holiday.

So you decide to feel the fear and do it anyway.

You get on the plane but the whole experience is just awful, worse than you could have imagined. It’s too hot, too loud, too cramped and there’s turbulence.

You don’t enjoy the holiday because you spend the whole time worrying about the flight back home again.

The worry makes you snappy and grumpy. 😬

You make it back home, but it’s not an experience you’ll be repeating any time soon.

We’re so often taught to override our fear and just get on with it.

But when it comes to business, that is just not a sustainable strategy. 🚦

We push ourselves to do the things we see working for other people, even when it feels horrible.

It doesn’t get the results we want, it doesn’t feel good and we don’t even want to stay consistent with it.

This is one of the reasons I believe in embodied business, and starting from the inside out. ✨

We get to feel the fear and do something - pick a different mode of transport, find a beach closer to home, go get some outside support to help ease the fear.
